It's kind of a dumb system, but it's what Zynga uses to make money. I know that some farm expansion items and things can be bought with coins once you have enough friends playing the game. I suggest that you recruit some friends to play and become your neighbors. That way you can get some of the bonuses without buying FV dollars with real money.
