Farmville Crosses 50 Million Users
At the end of September 2009, Farmville, broke a record that is down right astonishing for a Facebook game – it has been played by more than 50 million people. Let that sink in dear farmer. There are more than 50 million people playing Farmville in the world. That’s a small country’s worth of pepople pretending to be farmers in their spare time.
To compare this to any other game at this point is absurd. Really and truly, I’ve never even heard of a game being as popular as Farmville. Not only is it popular, but it’s what can only be described as a cultural phenomenon.
A year ago Farmville didn’t exist. In fact, 3 months ago it had about 10 million users. That’s growing some 400% in a few months, or something like 130% a month user base growth.
A website like Yahoo or Google or even Twitter would kill for those kind of growth numbers. At this pace Farmville might hit 75 or even 100 million users by the end of the year. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more Farmville players than iPhone users by the end of the year(if there aren’t already).
Of course, Farmville doesn’t seem to be content stopping at 50 million users. It continues to add anywhere from 2-5 million new users each week. It’s possible that it could grow by 5-10 million new users each month. Where it stops is anyone’s guess.
Well played Zynga. You hit the ball out of the park and into outer space.
